Tons of new work about to launch, stay tuned!
Happy New Year! I finally had a chance to slow down for a few days in Colorado, and look back at 2012- a super fun and hugely productive year. Some highlights: I started the year shooting a dream assignment about farmers and chefs in Hawaii for Sunset magazine- my favorite kind of story to tell. After searching high and low for a new studio, I found the perfect spot- it’s a giant space with gorgeous light and a professional kitchen. I shot everything from fashion campaigns, to food ads and a ton of cookbooks in the new studio and enjoyed fine tuning the space. I was also on the road more than ever- I worked in Hawaii, Vegas, Palm Springs, New Mexico, Arizona, Portland, Seattle, Puerto Rico, Colorado, Mexico and Bali. Los Angeles was home for 6 weeks, while I worked on a cookbook and then a big campaign for Coca-Cola. In between, I was home in the Bay Area and as always loved shooting from Big Sur to Wine Country. All in all, it was a fantastic, crazy busy year and I am grateful to have been able to work on such interesting projects. Most importantly, I loved working with amazing people who I really admire.
Thus far, 2013 looks great- in the next few weeks I’m shooting in California for Conde Nast Traveler and Food & Wine, then headed to NYC. After that, back to SF to work on cookbooks for Chronicle Books and Williams-Sonoma/Weldon Owen and prepping for a shoot in Japan!
Here’s to another fun, challenging, creative year!

The best compliment I’ve received in a while! William Grimes of the New York Times declares ‘Vintage Cakes’ the sexiest book of the year: ”If the recipe names in Richardson’s book — like “maple pecan chiffon cake with brown butter icing” — seem seductive, the photographs are downright pornographic. Forget “Fifty Shades of Grey.” This is the year’s sexiest book.” Thank you Mr. Grimes!
I’ve been in Bali for the last 10 days. It is ridiculously nice here- lovely people, great food, perfect surf, dreamy houses and hotels. Sure, it’s roasting hot, riding my scooter amidst giant buses is terrifying, and it’s really hard to deal with pre-production for upcoming jobs from here, but it will be hard to drag myself away in another week to head home. This is an image of the farm house we’ve been renting in Balian. Today, off to Uluwatu!
I just wrapped shooting the 4th book in this awesome Williams-Sonoma series, and just in time for fall weather, the third installment is out! Many thanks to the dream team involved for their great company, delicious food and abundant talent: Robyn Valarik food styling, Emma Boys and Amy Marr at Weldon Owen Publishing, and Leigh Noe on props. Italian braised short ribs… Baked kale and eggs… Calamari Fra Diavolo… So good.
Vintage Cakes for Ten Speed Press! I loved collaborating with Julie Richardson of Baker and Spice on this book- she and her recipes are wonderful. Check out her bakery next time you’re in Portland- if only she would open an outpost in my SF neighborhood! Of course this was a great gig because we ate cake everyday, but I especially loved working with this fantastic team- a big thanks to Robyn Valarik for food styling, Ethel Brennan on props and art director Toni Tajima.
California Home & Design: Cookhouse
This was a super fun shoot for California Home & Design at Cookhouse, which is a really gorgeous space for cooking and entertaining. I also got to hang out with the talented women behind Refinery 29, Rue magazine, PopSugar, Apartment Therapy and EaterSF, and enjoy an amazing meal by Chef Caroline Fey of City Kitchen. Beautiful styling by Natasha Kolenko. Thanks everyone!
Here is the latest cover + feature for Sunset magazine. I had the best time exploring British Columbia, Oregon and the Sierras for this shoot. Many thanks to Yvonne Stender and Jeffery Cross of Sunset for always being so great to work with, Lisa Moir for amazing styling, and Julie Roll/Look Model Agency for modeling (in a bikini the freezing cold)!
Check out this profile in PDN’s Pix magazine on my travels. Speaking of which, I’m in Puerto Rico for the week on a great assignment, I love it here!
